The Donkey’s Dilemma: Are you being an “Ass”?

You Don’t Want to Be an Ass, here’s how to not be one

Stacey loves film but started at a Big 4 firm in accounting because mom and dad said, “accountants are always going to be in demand.”

Despite thinking about film every day,  Stacey’s logic says she needs to say in corporate accounting.

That’s how a donkey sees things. When two options sit in opposition, they stay put.

We both know you’ve been there.

I have too… Watch my video to understand more about this “Donkey Dilemma” and keep reading to learn how to get un-stuck today.

My advice to people stuck in the Donkey’s Mentality…

Do something you think might, just maybe, possibly, make you happy.

Stacey, instead of withering away at your accounting firm, why not find a young video production company and see where you can add value?

Perhaps you could help them look over their books?

You don’t need to quit your day job just yet. You can add value once a week, or just on weekends. But you should explore your passion.

We need to see options as shades of grey, not as black and white.

Here is a list of hypothetical ways you can explore your passion, test a market, and get started TODAY.

  • If you know the general arena you want to move into:
    • Email a non-profit in the space you’re thinking about and volunteer once a month.
    • Google individuals who work in the role you dream about and ask to do an informational interview.
    • Find a “How-to” post in the space and offer it as a service to other people in the space.
    • Search Meetup.com for a local gathering on the topic you’re interested in and go (or if one doesn’t exist, why not start it?).
    • Offer to do what you currently get paid to do, part-time at a startup in the industry you are drawn to.
  • If you have no idea what you’re actually drawn to:
    • Realize that you’re kidding yourself. You have something, you’re just talking yourself out of the validity of recognizing it as your calling.
    • Make a list of “the type of people you think are living fulfilling lives” and connect with them.
      • Offer to do what you do for them, for free.
      • Ask them how they got where they are.
      • Ask them for perspective on how they make decisions (instead of asking what you should do)
        • Note what trends appear.
    • Think about areas in which you would “fight to defend” or “could cry” about.
      • Explore the ideas mentioned above in this space.

Here’s the thing… I know most people won’t do any of these things.

Why?

Because it’s easier to stay frozen between options. We convince ourselves that it’s somehow safer to analyze than it is to decide.

That’s malarkey.

Action is the only thing that matters and we need to place the highest value on actions.

If you’re frozen, just taste the hay. Not in love? Test the water.

See want feels right.

Consider it like dipping your toes in the water.

Then comes phase two: Diving in.

We’ll talk more about that soon.
