To-Big-to-Start: Why starting small is starting smart

BHAGs vs Too-Big-To-Start

In a past post called How to Set Big Goals, I talked about how valuable BHAGs, Big Hairy Audacious Goals, can be for businesses and people who are setting out to be great.

Yet, sometimes big goals and visions are overwhelming and become To-Big-To-Start.

This post will help you get started on your crazy goals by showing you the value of continuously improving a tiny bit at a time.

In my opinion, the thought of growing by 131,345.3% is TBTS (to-big-to-start).

First of all, how ridiculous of a claim is that? And who even knows what 131,345.3% means?

131,345.3% growth is a completely unapproachable and untouchable claim.

It sounds silly and impossible. It’s hard to get started on missions that sound impossible.

So, let’s make it more approachable…

If you want to learn how not-ridiculous it is to believe that you can grow by 131,345.3%, watch this short explainer video.

It doesn’t sound so silly now, does it?

Climbing Everest

No one would be able to climb Everest if all they focused on was the very tip of the mountain. The only way to get there is to focus on the very next step. Fixating on the peak makes the journey all but impossible.

Now, back to our example. Focusing on 141,345.3% growth doesn’t serve you.

But being hell-bent on taking that next step up the mountain, “climbing 1%” each day,” is completely achievable and obtainable.

In the video above, I break down an interesting point about what getting 1% better today would look like.

Here’s a link to that exact moment (in case you skipped it).

Pretty interesting – huh?

How to use this knowledge

What this means is that if we plan ahead, or just keep our eyes open, we have “one percent” hanging out all over the place – every day.

I can’t speak to what being a 1% better version of you is. But I know there are lots of ways that most people can work to improve themselves.

Here is a checklist of 20 tasks you can use to help you get 1% better today.

  1. call someone you haven’t spoken to in 6 months or more
  2. write a thank-you note to someone
  3. watch a TED Talk
  4. write your plan for the month
  5. read one of these books
  6. go for a run
  7. talk to someone that you wouldn’t normally talk to
  8. journal about the day
  9. meditate
  10. stretch
  11. read a biography
  12. upgrade your operating systems
  13. download and use Duolingo
  14. write an I Love You card to someone you love
  15. write an I Love You card to yourself
  16. stop and watch a street performer
  17. watch Kid President
  18. workout
  19. start a blog
  20. turn off your Facebook feed
